In early 2017, Giant Bicycles asked me to design their new mobile companion app, extending the possibilities of their populair e-bike series.

As creative lead I’ve been responsible for delivering this new product from the very first kick-off meeting until hand-off to a offshore development agency.

Challenge

The biggest challenge in this project was to consult the client in prioritising their feature list from a ‘master-of-none’ to a MVP product. Multiple creative sessions with the stakeholders and prospect users delivered a realistic scope for a first release of the app.

Solutions

This project was extremely fun to do, since it involved designing and implementing an app that could connect over bluetooth with over 20 sensors, a micro-computer and a 64px*64px screen. Combining that data with an internet connection made it possible to retrieve information about the battery, range, cadence, speed, distance, altitude and power a cyclist has during a trip.

The design of the app let’s users retrieve insights about how far they can ride their e-bike based on the battery level and selected ‘support mode’ of the motor. Users can adjust and tweak the support modes in just one tap, enabling them to navigate from point A to B without needing to worry about their battery.

What I learned

  • Tackle assumptions about product features as soon as possible. Work from an informed point of view, preferably by involving prospect users as soon as possible.

  • Working with overseas development teams is challenging. Take cultural differences into considerations (yes doesn’t always mean yes.)

  • E-mountainbikes are fun but dangerous! Ask me about this in person if you’d like to hear a funny story.
