Digital Design
Late 2017, Dubai Airports asked me to redesign their existing app based on a new brand identity. The redesigned app was going to be their first medium in which they communicated their new brand to the world.
Challenge
Because of the major distance between Dubai and Amsterdam, the challenge was to clarify every step in my design process in such a way that it managed expectations from both sides.
During the start of the interaction design phase I came across a number of interaction patterns in the existing app that could be improved based on HCI standards.
Solutions
The end result is a functional iOS and Android app that has a logical interaction flow and meets the desires of departing and arriving passengers.
What I learned
Define a UX checklist together with the client during the kick-off phase of a project. This checklist will help you to handle ‘wild’ client requests.
Convince clients of out-of-scope improvements by prototyping the improvement and casually showing it to them at the end of a meeting. If they experience the improvement themselves, they will come back to you.
Designing for right-to-left script languages (like Arabic) is way more complicated than just mirroring your UI and adding the language in a CMS.
