Tally is a viewer interaction platform for TV broadcasters, empowering them to enrich their TV formats with engaging interactive experiences. These formats span from sweepstakes to competition voting and quiz play participation.
As both the designer and product manager of Tally, I’ve been deeply involved in every aspect of shaping this product and business to its current state.
Challenge
One of the bigger design challenges has been to balance the required flexibility of Tally with an easy-to-use interface. Complex tools naturally demand a more intricate UI, potentially resulting in a steeper learning curve.
My strategic approach throughout this process has been to continuously test different iterations of Tally in ‘production pilots’ with prospective customers. This enabled me to collaborate with a diverse range of potential users, including production assistants, developers, marketing managers and TV hosts.
Solutions
The true strength of Tally lies in its integrated ‘Audience UI’ front-end generator. A TV broadcaster can simply define their desired experience, such as a synchronous quiz, and Tally will automatically generate the necessary front-end for viewers at home.
The only task for the broadcaster is then to customize the front-end to their likings, like adding their logo, adjusting some colours of fine-tuning the corner radius.
Results
After a full year of piloting with Tally, it is currently in daily use by the TV broadcaster RTL Germany. They have harnessed Tally’s capabilities to enrich their TV formats in various ways.
RTL Germany has measured an increased engagement during show that make use of Tally, which has resulted in me being more and more involved at RTL to collaborate on improving their TV formats with new Tally features.
