Regionale Publieke Omroep
Lead UX Designer
Product Design
In 2017, RPO asked me to become the lead UX designer for their 11 RPO apps. The RPO is the overarching non-profit for all regional broadcasting organisations in The Netherlands. Each regional broadcaster provides news to millions of users, through TV, radio, a website and a native app.
I’ve been responsible for the creation of a white-label design system that allowed each regional broadcaster to customize the look, feel and functionality of their specific app to their likings.
What I learned
The importance of aligning development with design, especially in the hand-off phase. Designs don’t always necessary speak for themselves. Try to move away from your design software and bring your designs into designated places, where they are accessible and manageable by non-designers.
Setting up a design system is like building Jenga in reverse. Make mistakes in your foundation, and you’ll have an unstable structure throughout the process. Learn from others, don’t try to do everything from scratch, and use proven ways-of-work to minimize overhead on system maintenance.
